Cork Tiles

Cork, what is it?

Cork is generally regarded as an environmentally friendly and sustainable product.

Cork used for flooring, wine bottles and insulation is a natural product harvested for commercial use from the bark of the Cork Oak tree, Quercus suber.  The regeneration of natural forests is continuous as the harvesting of cork does not require the removal of trees, just the bark.  The bark re-grows completely within around nine years when the cork is harvested again.

The easy recycling of cork products and by-products are two of the cork industries most distinctive aspects which contribute to the sustainability of the industry.

Cork has a high level of naturally occurring suberin, which means it is highly water resistant, as the main function of suberin is to prevent water from penetrating the ‘tissue’. It’s elasticity combined with its near water impermeability makes cork suitable as a material for bottle stoppers, insulation and as a flooring product.

Cork is a hard wearing floor for life and is considered to be warm in Winter, and cool underfoot in Summer. It can be resurfaced and resanded bringing life back to the floor after years of wear.

Cork provides a fuss free alternative to timber and is perfect for use in high traffic and wet areas.

Our Products
Cork Interiors has been supplying and installing cork flooring products in and around Brisbane since 1971 and as such have a wealth of knowledge and experience in the installation of cork flooring.

We have a proud history of providing an exceptional product and service to our customers and we offer a full supply and installation service to take the hassle out of your flooring experience.

Cork is a beautiful natural flooring product so some shade variation will be seen in any floor which is unavoidable, but we consider this adds character to the floor.

Types of Installation
Installation is easy and may take anywhere between 4 days and 14 days to complete, depending on the size of the flooring area.  There are two key types of installation:

Direct Stick
This process finds the cork tiles adhered directly to the sub-floor.  It is particularly suitable for concrete floors and new homes where the floor is level and clean.

On Underlay
The cork tiles are installed on a underlay such as masonite or particle board which has been secured to a suitable sub-floor such as timber.  This process is useful in older timber homes or where the sub-floor is uneven and rough.

As with any floor, preparation is the key to ensuring a high quality finish.

Styles
The versatility of cork is expressed in the variety of styles available.

Whilst most cork sold is natural in colour, other styles are available on request.  All our tiles are sanded and surfaced with three heavy coats of polyurethane to a selected finish of either Matt, Satin or Gloss at your request.

Do you have an existing cork floor and want to give it a new lease on life?

Re-sanding existing cork floor
Re-sanding a cork floor will strip away all polyurethane and cut the floor back to the natural cork. It provides an ‘as new’ result once the floor is surfaced with three heavy coats of polyurethane to a selected finish of either Matt, Satin or Gloss upon your request.

Re-sand should be considered when:

  • The floor has not been maintained.
  • Fire or water damage has occurred.
  • Individual tiles need to be removed or replaced.
  • The floor is peeling or flaking.
Once the existing cork has been rough sanded to remove all polyurethane coating, the floor is then buffed carefully to ensure as smooth a finish as possible. The floor is then finished with a hi-speed buff and three heavy coats of polyurethane are applied to restore it to its original state.

Customers should note that as with the installation of a new cork floor, this is a dusty procedure and we suggest that you read our customer reference sheet prior to installation or re-sanding.

Resurfacing Cork Tiles
A quick and easy way to bring your cork floor back to life is by a resurface. When your floor starts to appear dull and lacks lustre, it’s time to consider resurfacing.

We recommend that all cork tile floors be resurfaced at intervals of approximately 4-6 years to keep their shine and to keep the floor looking ‘as new’.

After the floor is cleaned with our approved solvent, it is then sanded lightly to ensure the new coat of polyurethane adheres to the surface.

As not all polyurethanes are compatible with each other, care is taken to ensure the surface is correctly prepared.  However there may be some trial and error in the process depending on other household products that have been applied to areas of the floor, such as ironing sprays etc.

We understand that no customer intentionally applies products to the floor which may have a detrimental effect on the resurfacing process and similarly we hope that our customers understand that we can not predict exactly what type of chemical reaction may be seen as a result of the process.

If a floor is flaking or peeling, expert advice should be sought before going ahead so please give us a call.

Cleaning and maintenance
Cleaning and maintaining your cork floor is easy, just a regular sweep with an electrostatic mop, soft broom or vacuum is all that is required. Then when necessary just mop over your floor using hot water and one cap of methylated spirits and a well-wrung cotton mop.
