Compared with hardwood flooring, bamboo flooring is an environmentally responsible, sustainable alternative to timber whilst not compromising the life and durability of the floor.

Why is bamboo a ‘sustainable’ option?
Bamboo is a sustainable option because the harvesting process does not impact on the intricate root system of bamboo which allows for sustainable future re-growth.

Unlike hardwood timber, the growing season of bamboo is quite short and each year after being thinned-out, one shoot will make several new stems that grow to full length in a few months and mature to hardness in about five years.

The combination of protecting root systems and natural regeneration of growth means that no forests are felled in the process of creating a beautiful flooring product.

Why is bamboo so hard?
On average, bamboo flooring is higher on the hardness scale than hardwood flooring. This hardness means that the floor is more durable and is expected to last longer than an ordinary timber floor.

How is a bamboo floor installed?
Bamboo flooring, when properly installed, is a beautiful durable floor-covering material. Its innate moisture resistance and stability allows for minimal expansion and contraction.

The bamboo should be delivered to the job-site 72 hours before installation to allow for acclimatization. As with any natural material, moisture absorbed by the flooring boards will cause them to swell and if installed before acclimatization, they will subsequently shrink back to their manufactured moisture content. This shrinkage may produce gaps, which will cause problems with the finished floor system.

Bamboo flooring can be installed on wood, masonite or plywood sub-floors and should be installed in a manner similar to that used for other types of solid hardwood flooring products. The sub-floor must be solid, level, clean and dry.

As bamboo is a product of nature, there will always be a natural colour variation from piece to piece and a natural gradient will be seen on any installed floor. This natural variation adds to the beauty of the floor.
