What is cork?
Cork is an environmentally friendly and sustainable product.
Cork used for flooring, wine bottles and insulation is a natural product harvested for commercial use from the bark of the Cork Oak tree, Quercus suber. The regeneration of natural forests is continuous as the harvesting of cork does not require the removal of trees, just the bark. The bark re-grows completely within around nine years when the cork is harvested again.
The easy recycling of cork products and by-products are two of the cork industries most distinctive aspects which contribute to the sustainability of the industry.
Cork has a high level of naturally occurring suberin, which means it is highly water resistant, as the main function of suberin is to prevent water from penetrating the ‘tissue It’s elasticity combined with its near water impermeability makes cork suitable as a material for bottle stoppers, insulation and as a flooring product.
Cork is a hard wearing floor for life and is considered to be warm in Winter, and cool underfoot in Summer. It can be resurfaced and resanded bringing life back to the floor after years of wear. Cork provides a fuss free alternative to timber and is perfect for use in high traffic and wet areas.
Cork Interiors has been supplying and installing cork flooring products in and around Brisbane since 1971 and as such have a wealth of knowledge and experience in the installation of cork flooring.
We have a proud history of providing an exceptional product and service to our customers and we offer a full supply and installation service to take the hassle out of your flooring experience.
Cork is a beautiful natural flooring product so some shade variation will be seen in any floor which is unavoidable, but we consider this adds character to the floor.
The versatility of cork is expressed in the variety of styles available. Whilst most cork sold is natural in colour, other styles are available on request. All our tiles are sanded and surfaced with three heavy coats of polyurethane to a selected finish of either Matt, Satin or Gloss at your request.
We have a wide range of coloured cork to suit the modern home. Read more about our Coloured Cork Tile here. Read more
Types of Installation
Installation may take anywhere between 4 days and 14 days to complete, depending on the size of the flooring area. There are two key types of installation:
Direct StickThis process involves adhering the cork tiles directly to the sub-floor. It is particularly suitable for plywood, chipboard and concrete floors in new homes where the floor is level and clean.
On UnderlayThe cork tiles are installed on an underlay such as masonite which has been secured to a suitable sub-floor. This process is useful in older timber homes or where the sub-floor is uneven and rough.
As with any floor, preparation is the key to ensuring a high quality finish.
